Parabens. We are hearing that word more and more everyday but what really are parabens? And why does it matter if they are in our beauty products? To put it simply parabens are preservatives, and they are used to increase the shelf life of a product by preventing the growth of bacteria. What you may see when you look at the ingredient list on some of your common bath, body and cosmetic products are methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, isopropyl-, and butylparaben. Parabens are found in moisturizers, cleansers, body washes, shampoos, sunscreens, deodorants, makeup and much more! If you go into your bathroom and check all your ingredients in your everyday products, you may be surpsied about the amount of parabens used in everything. Ok so now that we know what parabens are, why are they bad for you?
I think Beautycounter breaks it down in a simple, yet effective way. Parabens mimic estrogen, therefore they may play a role in triggering cancer and other health issues. Some parabens can also irritate the skin or cause allergic reactions. I like to present it in the most simple way, we don’t really like to see preservatives in our food we ingest, so why would we want them in our beauty and body products? Remember, 60% of what we put ON our bodies is absorbed into our bloodsteam! I will continue to do ingredient breakdowns of ingredients you want to look out for and how to gradually go “green” with your products so it isn’t overwhelming!!
