The main purpose of this blog is to spread awareness and show you some of the harmful chemicals and toxins that are hidden (and some not so hidden) in your everyday bath & body, cleaning, skincare and makeup products. I’m not here to scare you or preach, just to simply show you how to slowly convert (if you are interested in doing so) your products over to healthier and more more eco-friendly options that will truly change your family and household for the better! As a woman who has detoxed many of our products and household items I can honestly say our life feels more simple, clean and we have an extra feeling of security now.
Much of the ingredient knowledge I have stems from what I learned in Esthetician school, also countless hours onhttp://www.ewg.org. I have included a very helpful list (unfortunately this is not the entire list) of ingredients you DON’T want to see in your products, courtesy of Beautycounter. 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream, if we pay attention to the ingredients in our food why aren’t we doing the same with our products?!
WATCH OUT FOR
PARABENS (PRESERVATIVE): found in shampoos, conditioners, lotions, many different cleansers, facial wipes, etc. Heath concern: parabens are endocrine disruptors which mean they can disrupt hormone function, and can lead to increased risk for breast cancer and other toxicities in your body. YUCK! Watch out for, anything ending in “paraben,” methylparaben, isobutylparaben, proplyparaben, etc.
FRAGRANCE (SYNTHETIC): almost everything has an added fragrance these days and these pose major health risks. Found in almost anything you have from candles, perfume, dryer sheets, cleansers, moisturizers, lotions, hand soaps, etc. (this list can go on forever unfortunatley). Added fragrance is an engineered scent that is compromised of many chemicals that are hormone disruptors and allergens.
PHTHALATES (DBP, DEHP, DEP, & more): basically a plastic chemical that makes products more pliable and makes them stick. May cause birth defects and an endocrine disruptor. Found in nail polish, hairspray, and more.
OXYBENZONE: found in many sunscreens and moisturizers. Is added to sunscreen to absorb ultraviolet light. May cause allergies and hormone disruption. Warning: this is also found in children’s and baby’s sunscreens so keep a look out!!
MINERAL OIL: found in baby lotions, creams and ointments. Mineral oil is a petroleum by-product which is a by-product of gasoline production. More into petroleum later!
BHA & BHT: are basically fake antioxidants used to extend shelf life. Found in lotions, diaper creams, lipsticks and many cosmetics. Is a likely carcinogen that may cause liver damage and is yet again, a hormone disruptor.
COAL TAR: a by-product of processing coal and is a well known carcinogen. Often found in shampoos and hair dyes, it it used as a colorant and anti-dandruff agent. NOT cool.
BISPHENOL (BPA): found in plastic bottles, aluminum food can linings, possibly eyeshadow and hair gel. BPA is a hormone disruptor and may also alter DNA.
SODIUM LAUREL SULFATE & SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLS & SLES): found in shampoos, bubble bath, body wash. These are surfactants that can cause skin irritations and allergies
POLYETHYLENE (PEG): used often in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, and softeners. May be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane which are both carcinogens. Found in creams, shampoos, sunscreens and more.
FORMALDEHYDE: is widely used as a preservative. This is a widely known carcinogen, it’s used to embalm the dead for goodness sake, so why is it being placed in our products?! It is linked to asthma, neurotoxicity and dvelopmental toxicity. Found in shampoo, bodywash, bubblebath, nail polish and more. SO yuck.
PETROLEUM: is a by-product of gasoline production and a solvent often found in skincare, mascara and more popularly lip balm! This actually promotes sun damage, interferes with your body’s own moisture barrier and leads to more chapping and dryness (is said to cause people to be addicted to lip balm by never solving the problem!) It creates the problem that it claims to solve, what is wrong with that picture?!?
