April 2015 archive

If you follow me on Instagram, it’s no secret that I am a sucker for a good shimmery neutral eyeshadow. Anything that is a great multi-tasker and will give me that perfect “glow”, I’m all for it. As a result of my love for a good glow, I have become obsessed with (well let’s call it collecting, hoarding is so harsh!lol) anyways I have started quite a collection of neutral, shimmery little jewels that I absolutely adore and use on my clients ALL the time. Since I have so many I thought it would be fun to share a few of my favorites with some good swatches so you can see the different shades and tones and why it’s sometimes necessary to have a little variety in your makeup bag!!

Left to right, Alima Pure “Venus”, Alima Pure “Camel”, Alima Pure “Chai”, Alima Pure “Paris”, W3ll People “Luminous Taupe”, Modern Minerals “Jaipur”

Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow “Venus”: As you can see from above this one by FAR has the most sparkle to it, and I must admit is my favorite of the bunch. I just love how there are so many different tones of gold, silver, and pink and it’s almost like the perfect mix of warm and cool tones. Let me just tell you that this eyeshadow on the middle corners of your eyes will make your eyes POP, guaranteed!! Every single time I wear this I get compliments on my eyes, not joking!! You can also blend this out on your cheekbones, cupid’s bow and bridge of your nose to give yourself a super-glow, but if lots of sparkle isn’t your thing I would steer clear of this little gem. Retail: $12.50 http://www.alimapure.com

Alima Pure Pearluster Eyeshadow “Camel”: This is your typical bronzy gold that will is perfect for summertime or anytime you want to warm up your complexion. Above I watched it rather heavily but you can sheer this out and use as a highlighter as well. This would look especially amazing on tan or darker skin tones because this is definitely a sun goddess shade that gives off that perfect “just back from vacation” glow. This shade is a favorite of my clients! Retail: $12.50 http://www.alimapure.com

Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow “Chai”: I find myself reaching for this shade quite often because it’s a beautiful, perfect rose-gold shade that compliments everyone. As you can see from above, this shade is much more rose-pink than “Venus” and the sparkle is much more subtle as well. I use this shade often when I’m bronzing someone heavily because it imparts a healthy, more natural glow with it! I also like to mix this with Alima “Belize” bronzer to make a blush or mix with a clear balm for a gorgeous bronzy-rose lip!! Retail: $12.50 http://www.alimapure.com

Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow “Paris”: Now this shade is more cool toned and looks almost slightly purple above but it’s not really at all. It is just a simple sparkly beige that looks insane with a smokey eye!! I like to use this as a base and just pack it on the lid then line the eyes heavily with black liner and it makes for a simple, yet striking smokey eye!! I like to describe this as a “your skin but better with a touch of sparkle” shade. Retail: $12.50 http://www.alimapure.com

W3ll People Elitist Mineral Eyeshadow “Luminous Taupe”: This eyeshadow is definitely cool toned and more of a frost finish than sparkly. I only use this as an eyeshadow as it is much too frosty to highlight with but the pigment in this is quite impressive. I use this often when clients request a more silvery smokey eye. I find this shade to look beautiful on those with warmer and darker complexions because this is a shade that can easily wash someone out! The price tag is higher for this but the quality is top of the line! Retail: $16.00 http://www.thedetoxmarket.com

Modern Minerals Mineral Eyeshadow “Jaipur”: It is described as a “light sandy beige with a hint of pink shimmer” and I would say that’s pretty accurate although the pink is really subtle. I actually get a lot of light gold tones from it and it gives off more of a pearlescent finish and not so in your face sparkly. This shade makes for a great highlighter because it leaves you with a lovely candlelit sheen that gives off a natural glow. This was my first Modern Minerals purchase and I am really impressed with the quality of these!! Retail: $12.50 http://www.modernmineralsmakeup.com

Not only are all these gems beautiful, but they are clean and green of course. I absolutely love, love, LOVE seeing all these amazing nontoxic makeup options growing in popularity and the swatches above are proof enough, that you don’t have to compromise quality when you switch to green beauty!! If you have anymore questions regarding these brands or green beauty, feel free to contact me, I’m always happy to help!!

I am SO excited to have my best blogging friend Molly from http://www.maisonpur.com do a guest post for me today, and on such an important topic that I have been wanting to share for awhile now! I recently told Molly about my awful experience buying a new rug that consumed our living room with off gasses and chemical fumes so I immediately returned it. That led to a conversation about toxins in our home and I knew Molly would be the absolute best person to do this post, she has so many great tips and is the research queen! lol Enjoy free birds!

Hi everyone! I’m beyond excited and so honored that Lauren asked me to write a guest post for Free Love Beauty. Lauren and I talk a lot about products that are safe to put on your body, but I have a little bit of a different post for you today, to help keep you healthy in every aspect. Did you know that indoor air pollution can be up to 8 times higher than outdoor air pollution (according to the EPA), and most of it has to do with products we use or bring into our homes? Bad indoor air quality can contribute to everything from asthma to migraines even cancer. Pretty crazy! The good news is that I have a few tips to keep some of the worst offenders out of your home and help protect you and your family.

Ditch the energy saving bulbs!

Wait, what? Yes, those twisty, “eco-friendly” bulbs pose a huge risk- to the environment and to you. These things may be long lasting but they’re filled with mercury which is very hazardous to the environment when they do inevitably kick the bucket and get tossed. Some areas have CFL recycling centers but many do not, unfortunately. They also do lots of damage while they’re in your home. Studies (http://www.telegraph.co.uk) have found they release carcinogens like phenol, naphthalene and styrene when turned on, and they have been linked to things like higher rates of migraines and breast cancer. Oh and what if they happen to break while in your home? You should see the EPA’s guidelines for cleaning up this toxic hazard.(http://www2.epa.gov)

Off-gassing furniture not looking so pretty!

There’s nothing better than making your place into a home and picking out new furniture to fill your space. Have you ever gotten that new couch home and noticed your living room having a slight odor? Not a bad odor- just kind of like a new car smell? New furniture off-gasses chemicals like nobody’s business and the first weeks and months it spends in your place, it’s filling your air (and lungs) with flame retardant particles, stain protectant chemicals, formaldehyde and microscopic pieces of the foam filling inside with is generally full of toxins like phthalates. One solution is to unwrap new furniture and place it in a well ventilated area outside the main living area for the first couple of weeks (like a garage). The more economical option is to use second-hand furniture, even if you have to have it reupholstered. It’s also wise to choose solid wood pieces over particle board, which release many toxins from the bonding that’s used to hold it together. That being said, I know this is a hard one to stick to. At the bare minimum try not to get a whole room full of new furniture at once and try to give adequate time for off-gassing before placing items in a child’s or baby’s room. (The same rules apply for most rugs)!

**We are loving this mid-century modern bench made by http://www.kagedesignstudio.com. Their pieces are all custom made with reclaimed, raw wood and are absolutely beautiful. This is a perfect example of furniture that won’t “off-gas” into your home. Go with real, solid wood pieces!!**

Ewww that smell!

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again (probably 1,000 times): Stop filling your home with scented candles, plug-in air fresheners and room sprays. Everyone from your pets to your children will thank you. Synthetic fragrance is a sneaky little devil because it comes packaged all nice and can smell of roses, literally. But dig a little deeper under that Caribbean Escape facade and you will find a host of dirty little secrets.. Neurotoxins, carcinogens, allergens and hormone disrupters can all hide in a single scent. I detailed even more dirty secrets on my previous post about fragrance (http://www.maisonpur.com). Candles may be your worst choice considering that in addition to the added synthetic fragrance, most conventional candles are paraffin based and when burned studies (http://www.greenlivingonline.com) have shown they release toluene and benzene and actually pollute your air even more.

SO what can you bring into your home?!

Don’t worry, you don’t have to live in a barren, dark little box to keep the toxins at bay! No matter how much you avoid them though, there will be some present in your home. They are a few things that can help!

-A good first step is to open the windows whenever possible and let the old stale air out and fresh air in. I know that you may not want to do that in the middle of February in Boston, but whenever the opportunity presents itself, make it a point to let some fresh air in. Simple enough right?!

-Adding plants to your home can actually help to cleanse the air and remove the pollutants. It’s natures way of cleansing the air. Here’s a list (http://www.mnn.com) of some of the best plants for keeping the air clean (and there’s even some on there that I’ve managed to keep alive!).

phoenix_roebelenii**This is an Areca Palm (photo credit via http://www.homestarsearch.com) and it filters toluene and xylene from the air. An indoor plant is always a good idea!!**

-For cleaning up odors in the air look to essential oils. Not only do they provide actual therapeutic benefits to you, but they also can help cleanse and disinfect your air while providing almost any scent you want. Oil diffusers and reed diffusers are both easy options to freshen your air at home.

**This Now Solutions Ultra Sonic Diffuser is a great option to diffuse oils in your home. It is affordable and works like a charm. Just make sure the essential oils you use are therapeutic grade which means there aren’t any fillers or synthetic fragrances in there!! Find this diffuser at http://www.nowfoods.com

Hopefully this gets you started on cleaning up the air at home! Not as glamorous as the latest nontoxic makeup items, but just as vitally important to your health. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email me at molly@maisonpur.com. xo!

If you happen to follow my Instagram (@freelovebeauty) then you know I had an amazing Coachella adventure this past weekend!! I thought it would be fun to recap my trip and share some of the highlights and tips based on my experience!

First and foremost I have to point out that I didn’t take a ton of pictures of my outfits because that isn’t really what it’s about for me, I’m one of those people who actually go for the music, well and maybe the food! lol Don’t get me wrong, Coachella fashion can be amazing and I was rocking crop tops and tons of fringe, but I also do that in my regular everyday life so that was nothing new for me, haha! Anyways on day 1 I was pretty glam with lots of jewels, glitter on my eyes and my hair tousled just right, BUT on day 2 I wore ZERO makeup (that’s right, i said zero) and threw a hat on my head and called it a day! Now the reason I was super low-key on day two was because day one I was a sweaty, dusty mess and I realized the more natural I was, the more comfortable I would be, and I really was! My hubby told me on day two I looked like a real hippie should, natural and free. So that would be my first TIP free birds, don’t try so hard, wear something you are comfortable in and let your bare skin soak in the desert air!!

My next little slice of advice is to keep your weekend balanced! You don’t have to spend every single waking minute at the festival, the desert is a vacation in itself and my husband and I also spent quite a bit of time by the pool just relaxing!! Remember the desert is hot and it can take a toll on you by the end of the day, so the hub and I headed out to the festival in the afternoon which was perfect timing for the acts we wanted to see and it was starting to cool down a bit! So my next TIP is to not overwhelm yourself, if you are tired-relax, if you are hungry-eat, if you want to lay by the pool-do it!!

My absolute favorite part about Coachella was Jack White performing. He is one of my favorite musicians of all time so it was a major treat for us to watch his two-hour non-stop performance. For me it felt like I was witnessing a legend perform, perhaps the same way my Dad felt about Led Zeppelin when he was my age. Like I said before, these festivals really are all about the music so my last TIP is to just make sure you appreciate and take in everything around you. My best memory of the entire trip was grubbing on these hand cut french fries covered in BBQ pulled pork then smothered with this insane homemade cheese sauce (sorry no clean diet for me here!) with my hubby, sitting on the grass getting ready for Jack to come out and play!! Which brings me to my last TIP, make time to eat lots of food, because everything there is SO good!!

As you guys can see, our trip was full of sunshine, palm trees, amazing music and gorgeous sunsets. I highly recommend experiencing a big music festival at some point and if you aren’t a SoCal native like me, don’t fret because there plenty of festivals sweeping across the country that are becoming really big such as Sasquatch, Governor’s Ball, Sweet Life, SxSW, Outside Lands, Bonnaroo and many more!! Check out http://www.musicfestivaljunkies.com to find a festival near you!! Peace and love always free birds!

I am SO thrilled to finally share this review with you all!! I have had a lot of questions and readers inquiring about this skincare line I’ve been raving about on my Instagram so I know you all have been waiting ever so patiently for this! It all started when I read the amazing review about Pacific by True Nature Botanicals by the lovely Jessica at http://www.barebeauty.com and I discovered that we had very similar skin types after reading about her skin woes and battles. I too have been on the forever search for a nontoxic skincare product that will fight the aging process but also treat my minor acne issues I still battle at 29 years old. After I had my daughter and the stresses of dealing with my son’s illness, my skin has never been the same. I of course have found amazing products along the way that have improved my skin immensely, but definitely not an all in one treatment in the form of a face oil. Now I sit here after using the Pacific Balancing Face Oil for about 3 weeks now and my skin is smooth, balanced, hydrated and pimple free (no joke, not one pimple on my face). Before I breakdown my routine and the products, let me give you a quick background on this California-made brand.

The mastermind and CEO of True Nature Botanicals Is Hillary Peterson, a melanoma and thyroid cancer survivor and a product safety activist. Her main goal is to shift how people shop, and to share her knowledge about health, wellness, the environment and the importance of ingredient sourcing. And that is exactly what sets TNB apart, sourcing. TNB spares no expense when it comes to sourcing their ingredients, which is why they actually produce high impact results on your skin, and quickly. True Nature Botanical’s claim to fame is simple, “Serious luxury. Superior results. No toxins.” I was pretty much beside myself when they so graciously sent me a few of their products to try, and as an esthetician I can without a doubt say I have never in my life been this impressed with a skincare line, EVER! There, I said it, and it’s crazy because it’s just so simple. But that is what makes Pacific skincare so special, it’s simplistic luxury with the finest, safest ingredients soaking into your skin fighting off pimples and fine lines. Now let’s get to the goods and why I love them so…

Pacific Exfoliating Cleanser: I don’t think I’ve ever been addicted to a cleanser before but this one is addicting. With ingredients of chamomile powder, manuka honey and adzuki bean powder used to gently exfoliate the skin, it’s no wonder I look forward to cleansing my face! It’s a sophisticated cleanser, but polishes my skin the right way, without stripping my skin of it’s natural oils. The scent is light and earthy, which is exactly what I like. This gem is gentle enough to use twice a day, and I do just that! Retail: $48 (4oz), http://www.tnbotanicals.com

Pacific Mist: Ok, I am fricken OBSESSED with this stuff!! This mist is built to seriously help fight the aging process by hydrating with a huge antioxidant boost of green/white tea and sea kelp extracts!! I literally have to stop myself from spraying my face because it feels SO good, I can actually feel the goodness seeping into my skin. This mist is going to keep your skin super hydrated, plump and healthy, which is the key to the anti aging process! Retail: $48 (4oz), http://www.tnbotanicals.com

Pacific Balancing Face Oil: This is the game changer free birds. So, face oils haven’t really been my friend in the past. I mean, I definitely have my serums that I love, but a face oil is not usually part of my routine, until now. I starting using the balancing face oil about three weeks ago and by week one I wasn’t noticing much, but that was because I wasn’t using it faithfully and I was mixing it up with other things. So I switched up my routine and used ONLY the oil morning and night and just like that my skin transformed! I honestly couldn’t believe it was my own skin and this was the result of an oil!! My annoying under-the-skin bumps have disappeared and my skin is plumper, softer, smoother, brighter with an amazing healthy glow! Even my hubby noticed my clearer skin and the fact that I have been wearing less makeup because of it! If I could recommend one skincare product this would be it. The price tag may be a little high for some but remember that these ingredients are the absolute BEST you can put on your skin and a little goes quite a long way. This beauty is packed with anti-bacterial and anti-imflammatory oils of helichrysm and black cumin seed that are absolutely ideal for blemish prone skin along with hemp and pumpkin seed oils to balance sebum. The oil absorbs beautifully without any greasy residue, just a healthy glow!  Retail: $110 (1oz),  http://www.tnbotanicals.com

For those who are curious about my exact routine, I cleanse twice a day with the exfoliating cleanser, mist twice a day liberally all over face and neck, and then I apply the balancing face oil (4-5 drops) all over face and neck twice a day as well. The face oil wears nicely under makeup for me but lately I have been mixing a couple of drops with my tinted moisturizer or foundation and have been loving it!! I would like to give a huge thank you to Kevin of True Nature Botanicals for all the wonderful information and helpful tips. Pacific by True Nature Botanicals also offers a beautiful body oil, lip treatment, additional skincare and absolutely stunning solid perfumes that I will be getting my hands on sooner than later! Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding True Nature Botanicals or skincare related questions! Happy Monday free birds!

I love living in Southern California, but not for the reasons most would expect. The weather is a given and the beach is nice, but in my world nothing compares to Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley Desert. The desert is my zen place, it’s where I feel the most at peace. I love the desert so much I once lived there, and I know that is where my husband and I will end up one day again when the time is right. But until then there are always gorgeous weekend get aways and of course, Coachella.

For those unfamiliar with Coachella, it is a music festival that comes to our desert one a year and is possibly the biggest one in the country. In a couple of weeks my bare feet will be roaming the polo fields with an obligatory flower crown on my head, amazing music lifting my soul and the desert sun shining all around me. Since it is officially festival season, I thought it would be the perfect time to share what will be in my Coachella makeup bag this year. Although there are quite a few products, I have kept things relatively simple focusing on keeping my skin hydrated and protected from the sun. I will keeping my makeup light and dewy with a bronzed glow, but of course I’m going to be rocking my signature cat eye!

Suntegrity 5 in 1 Face Sunscreen: To me this is a no brainer for a music festival. A nontoxic, broad spectrum SPF 30 face sunscreen with great coverage??! I use this quite often but this is an absolute must-have for a music festival where I will be in the sun all day long! Retail: $45 http://www.suntegrityskincare.com

RMS Beauty Un-powder: I have oily skin. So to keep it from looking too oily I like this translucent powder to keep certain parts of my face super-matte. That way, my skin will glow in all the right places!! Retail: $34 http://www.rmsbeauty.com

Beautycounter Rosewater Uplifting Spray: To keep my skin hydrated and refreshed throughout the day, this gorgeous spray will do the trick. Whether you like it or not, the desert sun gets to you and you will eventually need some relief (even if you don’t want to ruin your makeup) so bust out the rose water when you need it, your skin will thank you for it! Retail: $32 http://www.laurenvanloo.beautycounter.com

Beautycounter Lip Conditioner & Matte Bronzer No.1: I’m not going to have time to prime, line and gloss my lips all day long, so a good lip balm will be perfect and keep my lips hydrated and I love the BC Calendula Balm! Also, the matte bronzer will give me a simple bronzed look with a natural contour look that I LOVE wearing in the desert! Retail: $18 (Balm), $36 (Bronzer)  http://www.laurenvanloo.beautycounter.com

Leahlani Mahana Coco Infusion: This body oil is insane!! Pure tropical luxury with an intoxicating, warm coconut and vanilla scent and not to mention the golden shimmer that makes you look like a sun goddess!! This is a music festival essential to give your skin that natural desert sun glow! Retail: $24 http://www.leahlaniskincare.com

Alima Pure “Venus” Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow: Peach, gold, pink, silver sparkles. It’s the perfect shade that works everywhere and I will be popping this on my tear ducts, cheekbones and cupids bow to keep my glow on point. It pairs perfectly with the matte bronzer and is my new favorite little gem! Retail: $12.50 http://www.alimapure.com

Beautycounter Protect Sunscreen: This is a given. A good, nontoxic sunscreen is a MUST at a festival. Your skin will be in the sun for three straight days so make sure your are protecting with a good, nontoxic, broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen. I like this one because it blends in pretty well and isn’t too heavy or sticky! Retail: $26 http://www.laurenvanloo.beautycounter.com

Gabriel Cosmetics Zuzu Luxe “Raven” Liquid Eyeliner: My readers and followers know i’m always with a cat eye and this is my absolute favorite liquid eyeliner, and it stays ALL day!! The black is super black and the felt tip makes for a precise application. Win, win! Retail: $14.85 http://www.gabrielcosmeticsinc.com

W3ll People Hypnotist Eyeliner: Nothing says music festival like a ton of black eyeliner and I love this nontoxic option. I line all around my eyes with this including my waterline and it has great staying power and great pigment. Retail: $18.50 http://www.thedetoxmarket.com

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Jumbo Lash Mascara: This was an impulse purchase because I needed a mascara right away so I swooped this up at Target and I actually love it! It doesn’t flake, coats and lengthens lashes well with a rich black color. I am personally not a waterproof mascara fan but they do offer a waterproof version of this! Retail: $9.95 http://www.physiciansformula.com

I hope my makeup bag is somewhat of a helpful guide to my fellow festival goers this year. I also hope it helps remind you that it’s always best to put your health first by protecting and hydrating your skin, then you can glam it up all you want! And remember: skip the heavy foundation, and hats and sunglasses are awesome when your hair is a dust pan and your makeup is melting off your face! Will any of you free birds be hitting up any festivals this year? If so, what are your festival must haves?!
