MY FAMILY PICS PLUS TIPS & TRICKS!

After a nice Thanksgiving yesterday, I finally have a little time to clean up the blog a little bit, and I’ve had so many sweet comments about my family pictures on Instagram, I thought I would share a little bit about my photographer, the location, outfit coordination AND how we managed to keep a 8 month old and 3 year old entertained throughout the entire process!! So here are a just a few of my favorite shots, below I will fill you in on my dream location we chose for them and more info about this amazing photgrapher!

Ok so I have to stop at some point but I wanted to show you guys a good mix of black and white and color shots, and also shots that give you a lot of scenery. First and foremost our photographer, Ericka G. of http://www.erickagphotography.com, and I have been friends since high school so I feel like she knows my personality, what I like, and what kind of vibe I’m going for.

Tip #1: If you are going for a certain type of look or vibe in your pictures, make sure your photographer is feeling it too, if you aren’t on the same page, your pictures aren’t going to turn out the way you want them to. I actually pinned a lot of ideas on Pinterest before our photoshoot, so Ericka knew exactly what I wanted.

Tip #2: LOCATION!! Half of the stress for me when it comes to pitcures is finding the perfect location. My husband and I do not like super posed pictures. We like some action shots too and some shots where it even focuses more on the scenery. Now living in Southern California leaves us with a lot of amazing options, but I had a particular idea in my head. I wanted a lot of trees, tall, dry brush, dirt trails, and Ericka knew the exact spot- Eaton Canyon in Pasadena, California. SO, it helps if your photographer gives you ideas or options!

Tip #3: OUTFITS!! Ugh this one is never fun. Well it may be for some people but I had such an idea in my head and I was on a mission to make it happen! Obviously from the pictures I was going for a very boho like feel with blue tones. I lucked out and scooped up my dress at http://www.ae.com, found my daughter her gorgeous feather headband at http://www.etsy.com/shop/atinyarrow, and my hubby and son’s shirts at http://www.nordstrom.com. All I can say is the days of matchy matchy are over, maybe pick a color or two and make subtle differences in each outfit. I liked to throw a pattern in there too to offset everything which is why my son’s shirt is so busy!

Tip #4: KIDS!! Keeping my son happy throughout the photoshoot was a process, but it definetly helped that we were outside and he could run around and get some energy out until we were ready to do another set of pics. I think if we were inside, cooped up and they were super posed it wouldn’t happen. My kids are free spirits and this was their type of photoshoot! Even for my eight month old daughter, it helped that there were so many trees and flowers for her to look at, it made it so much easier!! And I’m not even going to lie, there was some definite bribing going on with my son, lots of chocolate and ice creams bribes (hey, towards the end this kid was over it!).

Tip #5: MAKEUP! When getting professional pictures taken it is important to remember to keep makeup relatively simple, matte and defined. I will give a quick breakdown of the products I used on my instagram (@freelovebeauty). I only highlighted my skin on cheekbones, inner corners of eyes and cupids bow. Be subtle with highlighting,  you don’t want your face to look like a shiny disco ball on the pictures!!

So I hope these tips help a little bit. This was our first photoshoot as a family of four and overall it went great! The most obvious important thing when taking pictures is making sure your photographer is amazing, and ours is! Ericka has done our maternity, family and even pictures right after my daughter was born!! Ericka is a wife, mama, and such a positive, beautiful soul to the core. I truly think that shines through her pictures. She is also the ultimate California girl so if you reside in SoCal or are ever passing through and want some amazing pictures, she is your gal. You can check out more of her work on http://www.erickagphotography.com. She is also an amazing wedding photographer!!

***Disclaimer: Please do not use or share these photos without my AND the photographer’s permission. These photos were taken by Ericka G. of http://www.erickagphotography.com. Photographer’s work must also be credited if permission granted, thank you!***

I love how excited you all were to learn more about Leah from Leahlani Skincare! She truly is a beautiful person inside and out, and so much fun to interview!  Part two of my Leahlani feature is going to be a little overview of the wonderful products she sent me. And I have to say, I think I have been living in the Mermaid Mask, slathering my skin in the Honey Love Micodermabrasion cleanser every night and made her Coconut Vanilla Perfume a staple in my handbag! I’m officially obsessed with Leahlani Skincare!!! The only thing you won’t see pictured below is the Aloe Day Cream because my son hid it from me! I’m not joking, that kid loves messing with my stuff and he loves little containers so the search continues for my Aloe Day Cream!!

Honey Love Microdermabrasion 3-in-1 Mask, Cleanser & Exfoliator: Made with organic Hawaiian honey, a lovely essential oil blend, rosewater and corundum crystals, this stuff is the bee’s knees (pun intended). I absolutely love a multi-use product and this does the job in so many ways! I’ve actually used it all three ways but I find myself using it as an exfoliator mostly! The crystals are the standout ingredient because they make for a gentle exfoliation yet super effective! My skin is silky smooth after using this!! Retail: $32

Mermaid Mask: I have a feeling many of you are familiar with the Mermaid Mask! Stuffed with Organic Hawaiian spirulina, chlorella, and sea buckthorn, this mask is literally superfood for your skin! Love the mermaid green color and the slight tingle my skin gets when its on, that means the blood is flowing and the mask is doing its job!! Retail: $22

Champagne Serum: Leah calls this “happy hour for your skin,” and it truly is. This serum is lovely. Compromised of grapeseed, rosehips,  & jojoba oils and Leahlani’s signature balancing oil blend (lavender, chamomile, rose geranium) this serum blances and seriously hydrates!! With winter coming I HIGHLY recommend!! Retail: $30

Siren Serum: This one is the game changer beauties! This serum is anti-again AND brightening, and I definetly get the brightening effect on my skin! It’s also important to point out that Leahlani’s serums absorb really, really well and don’t leave any residue. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this serum!! Did I mention that I love it?! haha. I get this beautiful light jasmine and orange scent when I use it and it’s just so calming and amazing to put on my fresh clean skin after a long day. Standout ingredients: jojoba, sea buckthorn, algae, frankincense. Retail: $38

Aloe Day Cream: Whipped up with  french lavender, Blue Tansy, Geranium and Chamomile essential oils, this day cream is made to balance hormonal skin flare ups. I love the feel of this cream, it feels light on the skin yet hydrates really well. This would also be great for a winter skin routine as well! Retail: $18

Coconut Vanilla Organic Perfume Oil: I’m obsessed with this, my new go-to perfume! Bottom line: it’s nontoxic, with a warm, soft coconut & vanilla scent and it stays throughout the day!! Leah suggests rubbing a little in your palms and running through your hair, DO IT!! You will smell like a Hawaiian goddess all day long, or night long! Retail: $20

All of Leahlani Skincare can be purchased at http://www.etsy.com/shop/LeahlaniSkincare. Your skin will thank you for this, trust me!

***Since my lovely sister is a Leahlani user and I will have access to her Champagne Serum, I think it would only be appropriate to do a giveaway with the one Leah so graciously sent to me! Check out my Instagram @freelovebeauty for more details!***

THE FACE BEHIND LEAHLANI SKINCARE, PT 1

So this is a HUGE deal for me. As an esthetician I take skincare really seriously, so when I discovered the nontoxic, Hawaiian-infused and somewhat whimsical Leahlani Skincare on instagram, I knew I had to investigate further. Leah K. is the beautiful soul behind this line and let me tell you, she pours every ounce of it into Leahlani. What intrigued me the most about Leahlani was the ingredients (raw Hawaiian honey, chorella, spirulina, various essential oils and more organic goodness)  and the fact that they are all sourced from Kauai, where she resides. I mean, I haven’t really seen anything else out there with the Hawaiian factor and the fresh Hawaiian ingredients. Leah’s background spoke to me; from going to a holistic esthetician school, combating severe acne, and keeping things nontoxic I immediately felt like we were somewhat kindred spirits, and I had to know more! Leah was SO very gracious to take the time out of her busy schedule to give me an interview, and she really gives us the low down on running a skincare line, Hawaiian life, and how to treat your skin right! Leah’s positivity and kindness is contagious, if this woman doesn’t inspire you I don’t know who will!! Enjoy!

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: I see you went to school to become a holistic esthetician, what are the differences between a holistic esthetician and a traditional esthetician?

LEAH: The esthetician school that I went to (Spa Luna) really centered around intention and hands on healing. The courses were based on teachings that help create a conscious interaction with our client. A holistic approach is focused around the client as a whole, taking into account their diet, lifestyle etc. when doing a facial analysis. We used natural based products in practice and were trained in aromatherapy. The essential oil blending class was on of my all time favorite lessons. One of our day trips involved going to a lavender farm to learn about the different variations of lavender, and another involved going to collect specific stones to learn ‘pohaku’ or hot stone massage. We learned a lot about natural supplements that benefit skin health and balance, so we were trained to recommend specific supplements to our clients.

I asked my mom this question for a reference because she is an esthetician too, and went to a traditional esthetician school, so I was curious what her experience was like vs. mine. She told me that her education was centered around the Milady’s Standard (Esthetician fundamental textbook) and that her school was sponsored by a skincare company, so most of her education came directly from the textbook and her training was centered around using that particular skincare line (that sponsored her school). While we did use Milady’s standard as our textbook as well, we also spent an equal amount of time learning Eastern, Chinese, Ayurvedic and European techniques combined with lymphatic cleansing and muscle toning. Our guest speakers would talk about Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage techniques and Pohaku stone massage, lymphatic cleansing, seasonal cleanses, different trigger points and massage techniques for toning the facial muscles, aromatherapy. It was very alternative, but so enriching. I still go through my notes from time to time as a reference.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: I’ve read in your background that you created Leahlani to heal your cystic acne. Did you have a moment when you realized, “hey, I’m onto something here!”

LEAH: I can remember graduation day so clearly. My skin was a mess, and because of it, so was my spirit. The owner and principle of the school, Samana, pulled me aside and whispered in my ear, she told me

“Leah, I know how hard this is for you, but I promise you, your skin troubles are going to make you more empathetic as a practitioner and it is part of your journey, your story. It’s here to teach you something”.

She was so right. My passion for creating Leahlani Skincare runs deep. My skin journey has not been easy; in fact, it has been far from easy. As an esthetician, I have worked on hundreds of clients who have acne, and I know the emotional impact it has on your spirit. There were a few months where I didn’t want to leave the house, and multiple times in my practice where it was such a struggle working on clients when my skin wasn’t up to par myself.

Skin is so complex. My acne was a combination of so many factors, mostly stress and dietary factors and for me, hormonal issues. When my skin starts to act out, I generally know why by looking at where on my face my breakouts are. So I understand that our overall health directly affects our skin health, but having a good skincare ritual using gentle and natural products can make such a difference in the appearance of your skin as well. That is where Leahlani Skincare came along. I started blending and creating my own products to help heal my skin, and then I started incorporating them into my practice. One of the biggest complaints I would hear from my clients was that they dreaded washing their face at night. I wanted to change that… I wanted them to love the ritual of skincare as I had learned through creating Leahlani Skincare. There were so many factors involved in creating my skincare line, and yes, it all started as a way for me to help heal my skin… and then it evolved into so much more. I love giving facials, I truly do.  I cannot give everyone a facial personally, but with Leahlani Skincare… I kind of can!

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: What is your absolute favorite ingredient to work with and why? I mean, I have a good guess but I have to ask! 😉

LEAH: Organic raw Hawaiian honey, and essential oils. Those are my all time absolute favorites. They are like the holy grail of natural skincare. Needless to say, I am a bit obsessed with both.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: I LOVE how your line ties into Hawaii, as soon as I open your Mermaid Mask I immediately get an overwhelming sense of the ocean, sweet Hawaiian honey and paradise! What is your favorite part about Hawaiian life?

LEAH: I could spend about an hour answering this question, but I will try to keep it short. My brother and his girlfriend bought be a ticket to Kauai for my 21st birthday. All of my life I had dreamed of living on an island, and I had never been to Hawaii. When the plane landed at 9:30 pm, I couldn’t see a thing. There are no bright city lights, and there is only one main road. I knew right away that I was home. It was a feeling. I never used the return flight, and I have been here ever since. I met my husband here, so it will always be a sacred space. I love just about everything about island life. I love the food, the lifestyle, the simplicity, and the community. I love that I don’t have to wear shoes or pants. I love the clean air, the beautiful mountains with cascading waterfalls, the ocean and its many shades of blues, the trade winds and the lingering scent of plumeria flowers. I love the smell of the rain here, there is nothing like it. I love that I feel at peace and at home. It is not for everyone, and I completely understand that.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY:  With all the toxins in traditional perfumes, it’s awesome that you offer beautiful, natural perfume oil too, what brought on that idea?

LEAH: There is such a demand for natural fragrances. I have tried so many, and I hadn’t found one that I liked, I hadn’t found one that was different from the others. I would get asked all the time if I would create some natural fragrances that weren’t too earthy or ‘hippy’ smelling, so I started to get creative. My inspiration for my two pure natural and organic perfumes came from my life here on Kauai. The organic Coconut Vanilla is pure sunshine and warmth. Creamy tropical coconut and sweet vanilla. It is my go-to every day scent. The PuaKini Tuberose is a blend of two of my favorite tropical flowers that are commonly used for lei making on the islands, Puakinikini and Tuberose flowers. It is a soft yet strikingly beautiful floral fragrance that leaves you longing for more. I wanted to create blends of fragrances that would evoke the ultimate sense of nostalgia, that would make you close your eyes and smile, make you able to escape reality for a moment and enter into a state of bliss.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: I have to say as a fellow esthetician I am beyond impressed with your range of products, and how different they are from anything else out there! I am especially intrigued by your Honey Love Microdermabrasion 3-in-1 cleanser, mask & exfoliator kit, HOW did you come up with such an amazing multi-use product? I mean, it’s genius!!!

LEAH: And I have to say I am so honored to be interviewed by an esthetician! Thank you.

Hands down, the Honey Love 3-in-1 is by far my favorite product I have ever come across. This is what helps keep my skin clear. I love creating versatile and multipurpose products that can be used in many different ways. I spent a long time looking at traditional exfoliators under a microscope, literally. Many natural exfoliating compounds have jagged and rigid edges, which will tear the skin cells and overtime can create premature aging, broken capillaries and skin irritation. Corundum microdermabrasion crystals are amazing. These crystals are so fine and spherical, so no jagged edges. Traditional exfoliators can also really strip the skin of oil, so I wanted mine to be hydrating. Exfoliating can also cause inflammation, so I wanted mine to have a lot of anti-inflammatory ingredients. And most importantly, I wanted to create something totally unique and one of a kind that would require you to be hands on. So many people are using electrical exfoliating devices (which are really awesome and lovely as well) but I wanted there to be a direct hand-to-face connection element that would require a small bit of time and intention, both are so important for self care. There is a lot of love in that little jar, and I love that it has my favorite ingredients in it- Hawaiian raw honey, lavender, and chamomile and hibiscus flowers.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY:  So what is a typical day like for you? Because I picture you in a grass hut, overlooking the ocean, surrounded by magical oils and potions concocting beautiful elixirs for us, am I close?? Lol

LEAH: Oh how I love that image J my husband and I wake up every morning and drink coffee together and then go on with our days. He surfs when there are waves, and spends a lot of time in the ocean looking for shells and sea glass for his jewelry making. I spend the vast amount of the day on Leahlani Skincare. If I told you how much time I spend, you would think that I am crazy. This past year, we have been working extremely hard on rebranding our entire line, and formulating new skincare items. I cannot wait to share these with everyone!! The names, the ingredients, the textures, they are so delicious. Just about all of my time has been devoted to that. Leahlani Skincare evolved on its own, I didn’t have a business plan, or esthetic idea of how I wanted my products to look on the outside. All of my thought, finances and passion went into what was inside the jars… no fancy packaging, no website (aside from etsy).  But my incredibly talented sister spent one year here on Kauai working by my side, helping me envision what I want my brand to look like. I hope to unveil it all early next year. But aside from all that, I have my mornings and my evenings. I love watching the sunsets on Hanalei bay with my girlfriends or family popping a bottle of champagne, and most of the evenings we get together with my parents for dinner and end the day drinking tea and eating coconut macaroons. Not too shabby.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY:  What is the message behind Leahlani Skincare that you want your followers, readers, and users to know?

LEAH: Each jar is filled with a lot of aloha. My love, passion and intention runs deep and is in each product that I make. It took me a long time to realize that self-care and self-love is truly crucial for overall health, and that it is okay to take care of you. I want you to fall in love with your ‘me-time’ and skincare ritual, and began and end your day with a little aloha and the best of intentions. When ending a facial, I always did a few minutes of intentional prayer. I would place a few drops of lavender on my palms and gently lay my hands on my clients face. I would pray for healing, love and abundance. That is what I envision while making my products.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: Why, in your opinion, is it important to have an esthetician background in creating an effective, high-performance product line? How does your background set you apart?

LEAH: This is an extremely valuable question. For me personally, I would not have been able to create a skincare line without my background. It is equally important for me having the esthetician background and having spent years giving facials. You learn so much from your clients, spending at least an hour with each client, with your hands on their face. You are feeling so many different textures of skin, each so unique and different, each with individual needs and different reactions. Every facial I gave and every hour I spent in school was golden and valuable. I feel I am able to give an educated skin analysis with confidence and answer the important questions I am asked. There are so many contraindications with skin care and ingredients as well, and I feel it is especially important to have the educational background to sincerely know all of this. It is not easy to do a skin analysis via email, but I sell my products three days a week at various places on island when I am behind the counter. Anyone who comes up to me to inquire about my products can ask me questions about their skin, and I feel confident in accessing what would best resonate with them from my line, and I am always more then happy to give tips or share more information with them to help them achieve their goals. My personal skin journey has been equally as valuable for me as well.

Ok so I like to have a little fun with my obligatory questions so readers can get to know you on a personal level (don’t worry, not too personal)!

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: What is your favorite food in the entire world?

LEAH: Coconut! Coconut water, coconut meat, coconut milk… without a doubt, coconut is where its at.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: Top 5 favorite bands/artists?

LEAH: I don’t have favorite bands and artists really, but I have favorite music that I listen to at specific times. For instance, when driving, my Pandora station is set too straight hip-hop and rap. My speakers are blasted and I like to feel the music and move in my seat. I think that surprises most people when they drive with me… but it’s a long and sleepy road to town from where I live with little stops, so it helps me stay awake.

When I am in the Leahlani Lab, I like to turn my Pandora to French music. I love that I don’t understand the words at all, so that’s not where my focus is. It evokes nostalgia in me that I have no reference for, as I have never been to France. But I simply love it.

When I need a lift, I love reggae. One of my favorite songs is Your House by Steel Pulse. When I need to be shift my mood, that is my go too. I cant help but dance and sing and smile.

And Hawaiian Music… ahhhh. When I hear Hawaiian music, I feel at home, and all warm and cozy inside. I loved playing Hawaiian music during facials.

I am all about the feeling of music. I want to feel the beats in my bones and I want to listen to music that automatically makes me want to move. My husband has various video recordings on his phone from me in the car or at the supermarket rockin’ out… I hope those never get leaked, lol!!

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: Cats or dogs?

LEAH: Cats Cats Cats

***So I decided to break my Leahlani feature into two parts since there are so many wonderful things to share about the brand. SKIN ANALYSIS: NORMAL SKIN

Ok beauties, this has been something I have really wanted to do since I started this blog, and that is do a monthly skin analysis for you all.  I am hoping to eventually cover all skin types and address many skin concerns and questions you have regarding your own skin.  As an esthetician and green beauty advocate it is my mission to help you all achieve beautiful, balanced, radiant and healthy skin using all natural and nontoxic products! The beautiful brunette beauty pictured below is my long time friend Alicia, and she came to me in search of some new green beauty products in hopes of eventually detoxifying her entire beauty routine (another convert beauties, yay!). Of course I was delighted to help and went over a healthy skin care routine with her and also had some fun doing her makeup for her (she’s so gorgeous it was  the easiest makeup application ever!).  First off, after giving Alicia’s skin an analysis I determined her skin was normal; I mean this girl has NO blemishes, NO dryness, NO oilyness, NO signs of aging (totally jealous).  She probably has the most beautiful skin I’v ever seen with these amazing freckles peeping through. So, the routine I have suggested below are for those with a NORMAL skin type. Alicia is 29 years old so I wanted to throw in a couple of age preventative things because you can never start too early ladies!!

Night Routine

Step 1,REMOVE: I love RMS raw coconut cream to remove makeup. Apply a small amount to skin and gently remove with a soft cloth. Since this is organic coconut oil, I think it’s a perfect makeup remover for normal skin. Retail: $18 (2.5 oz) $42 (8oz).

Step 2, CLEANSE & EXFOLIATE: This Konjac Puff Facial Sponge is my new obsession. You don’t even need a cleanser with these because each one contains something beneficial in them already! The Konjac Sponge is made with 100% top quality food grade Konjac plant root. This plant root balances the acidity of the skins impurities and oils. It stimulates the blood flow and growth of new cells. Dare I say you may not need a clarisonic anymore with this gem of a sponge?! For normal skin, I recommend the green clay sponge. Retail: $11

Step 3, TREAT: If you have normal skin and get an occasional pimple here and there, I recommend the Indie Lee Blemish Stick to keep them at bay. Alicia did not have blemishes so she doesn’t need to treat with anything else (lucky girl)! Retail: $31

Step 4, HYDRATE: Alicia is still young but we can never start the age preventing process early enough right?! To keep the process gentle, yet effective I recommend Indie Lee’s Squalene Facial Oil, it improves elasticity, radiance and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines. You may use this is conjunction with a night cream during the winter months for extra hydration but this hydrates extremely well on it’s own as well, without leaving an oily residue whatsoever!! Gently work into face and neck, a little goes a long way! Retail: $35

Step 5, EYES: Again, don’t neglect your eyes, even at this age!! I think Beautycounter Any Time Eye Cream is a perfect choice for just starting out with an eye cream! It’s super gentle and full of aloe and coconut oil to really hydrate the eye area! Retail: $32

Day Routine

Step 1, CLEANSE: For morning keep it simple, splash your face with cool water to wake you up and get that blood flowing! I actually like to rub an ice cube all over my face, it tightens & brightens!! Then gently cleanse with Beautycounter Cream Cleanser. Retail: $24

Step 2, TONE: For normal skin you don’t really need anything too strong to tone, which is why I like Beautycounter Rosewater Uplifting Spray. Spray all over face after cleansing then give it time to soak in. This is going to make your skin look healthy and refreshed! Retail: $32

Step 3, HYDRATE: You can use the Indie Lee Squalene Facial Oil during the day too which is another reason I love it so much! It is extremely wearable under makeup and gives you a from within glow that I love! Remeber, a little goes a long way. Retail: $35

Step 4, PROTECT: Not only is sunscreen imperative to keep you looking younger and preventing skin cancer, but  a nontoxic sunscreen is even more imperative for doing the job and keeping those toxins out!! The Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer, Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is an amazing nontoxic all in one that protects you from the sun and preps your skin for makeup. AMAZING! Apply this on face and neck to prep skin for makeup! Retail: $45

Weekly: Once a week it’s imperative that you treat your skin to a nice mask to deep clean and restore your skin. My new favorite is the Leahlani Skincare Mermaid Mask. This mask is literally a superfood for your skin, full of Hawaiian raw honey, spirulina, chorella, sea buckthorn and more! Use this green gooey magic twice a week for about 5 minutes and your skin will thank you for it! Retail: $22

Ok beauties I hope you enjoyed my first on the blog skin analysis, I will try to do one once a month to address more skin related questions and concerns!!

GETTING TO KNOW MOLLY OF MAISON PUR!!

This is a post that I am especially excited about. Molly is the face behind one of my personal favorite green lifestyle/beauty blogs Maison Pur, and we have teamed up to interview each other! We are hoping that through our interviews, you can get to know us a little better as wives, mothers, bloggers and green beauty advocates! Molly has become a fast friend of mine via Instagram and email, I feel like we just connected instantly (our hubby’s find it funny how you can have such good friends on social media). We also support each other, our blogs and what we stand for. We hope you enjoy our interview fun, most of it is green living/blog related, but we answer a few fun questions at the end! 🙂

http://www.maisonpur.com

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: What made you decide to go green in your household?

MAISON PUR: Ok, here’s the long version: When I was 18, I lived in Africa for a bit and contracted Malaria. Since the treatment is basically poison, it was a long road to feel like myself again and get well. I really became aware of nutrition and the toxic crap in our food. I began avoiding processed foods and trying to eat organic whole foods instead. I thought I was living a pretty healthy lifestyle and doing a good job of avoiding the bad stuff by eating clean. It wasn’t until I was pregnant with my first child that I learned the truth about what was in all of the products and cosmetics I was using, along with all the toxins in our household stuff. Then mild panic may have set in :). I went into a frenzy to try to clean out our house! I’ve been dedicated to keeping our home pure ever since.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY:  How many kiddos do you have? Ages and names?

MAISON PUR: I have 2 kids- Carson just turned 4 and Annabelle is 1 1/2.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY:  How did you come to the name of your blog?

MAISON PUR: Maison Pur is French for Pure Home. It’s a nod to my love of all things French but also a horrible choice for a blog name! No one can ever remember it and unless you speak French you would have no idea what my blog is about.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: What type of impact are you looking to have from your blog?

MAISON PUR: If nothing else, I see my blog as a place to educate and advocate for a non-toxic lifestyle. I’m passionate about sharing the truth about what’s in our products, but I also love showing that ditching your toxic products doesn’t mean you have to go super crunchy with dirty hair and smelly pits. I’m definitely not a hippie! I expect my products to keep me looking and smelling fabulous, and not to be adding toxic crap to my body.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY:  What is you favorite green beauty product (this one will be tough!)?

MAISON PUR: Like asking me to choose a favorite child!! I would have to say my Suntegrity 5-in-1 because it’s one of the only products I use everyday. I play around and rotate most everything else.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: What do you suggest for those trying to make the switch to a green lifestyle?

MAISON PUR: I usually say to start with the things that cover the most surface area, like body lotions and things with a lot of fragrance (ditch the perfume ASAP). But most other products are easier to switch as they run out. Otherwise, it can be costly and you may not end up with products you love when you rush to buy replacements.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: What are your top 5 favorite bands/music artist?

MAISON PUR: So hard to narrow it down! I’d say Mineral, Braid, David Bazan, Ben Folds, and Smashing Pumpkins. Lot’s you may never have heard of but I’m a 90’s emo girl at heart.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY:  Absolute favorite food?

MAISON PUR: I love a lot of ethnic food but if frequency counts, my most favorite food is Chipotle. Specifically, their vegetarian burrito bowl with lot’s of Guac. I have that at least twice a week!

FREE LOVE BEAUTY:  If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

MAISON PUR: Ahh! Another tough question and one my husband and I talk about a lot! We’ve both lived abroad so we often talk about moving abroad again, maybe to Spain or France (mostly after too much wine). We also talk about NYC or Boston, but at the end of the day, our kids are little and all of our family is here, so for now Charlotte is our perfect place.

FREE LOVE BEAUTY: Favorite nail polish shade of all time?
